Bahamas... hmmm
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that The Bahamas was not as impressive as Bermuda. I don't know if it is because I am so familiar with Bermuda, but I don't think it is. I am going to write more about my trip and post some pics in the beach blog...

Hour on a bike
Over the past 2 weekends I have a few hours on my bike. Seriously, an hour + here and an hour + there. I have decided that spending an hour straddling those nasty uncomfortable seats should only be done on a motorized vehicle from say St Georges to Dockyard.

So it is raining again this evening. I opened the front windows to let the cool air in. And as the rain comes down and the breeze works itself in the windows - there is a hint of Easter lily in the air. What a nice surprise.

Americans on Scooters
A friend of mine has been spending some time over this past year in Thailand. I say that this is on my list of someplace to visit for my 40th birthday. A friend of mine also has some friends spending time in Thailand. He recently referred me to her blog. I found this entry to be entertaining....

Ahhh the love of a scooter. You all know I am addicted. I just need to work my way over to South End to the Vespa place and check them out. I know I have been saying that for some time now. I avoid going in a effort to save money.
I laugh that her parents hope she outgrows it.... hmmm - not likely.... It really is a lot of fun and convenient to run a few errands. And on the really nice days with the sun and wind in your face.
Sure there is the fear of road rash. I knock wood that I have been lucky so far.... I have friends that have taken spills during visits. I don't know which is worse the left is right aspect of the 2 wheels. My friends Mark and Pete even drew some blood. Pete's was worse - he hit the ground and really scraped up his knee. Mark hit his toe on the curb. Probably the worse was my mom. She didn't draw blood. She just had the most finesse - would you expect anything less...
We were headed to Southampton Princess for dinner from Middle Road. She was so awestruck by the lighthouse and hotel at the top of the hill she stopped paying attention to the road. The scooter hit the curb and she did a little dance into the grass... It was the worst because the whole dinner everyone was just mad at everyone else as a result of the incident. So much for a lovely dinner overlooking the ocean.
I have to say I did hit a curb once. I shouldn't make it sound like I acclimated immediately. My scooter and I went flying up over the curb onto the sidewalk. I am very thankful I stayed on the bike. However I did have some books in the basket that went flying out into traffic. So instead of scooting away like nothing happened. I had to park the bike and play in traffic to retrieve my books. That was just as scary as flying over the curb. I'm probably lucky I didn't get hit.
Oh well no scooters for now - the winter months around here wouldn't really warrant it.

Pierce
So... how do you go from hosting a free football camp for local kids and raising money for scholarships to being caught up in some gunshot scandal? Bad PR person I suppose? Or maybe a good PR person? So good that you don't know how to make good decisions in your personal life? Will the Sports Minister drop his "hero" status?
I am just pissed. As you all may know I just love the Giants. And last year when they gave their all at that season finale game against the Pats... I was stoked. And then to go on and win the SuperBowl against the Pats. I was sky high. Nothing better than sitting back and watching a good football game.
So on Sunday when I was all bundled on the couch sitting back watching the Panthers I thought I was hearing things - like the use of a bad cliche - when they said Plaxico Burress had shot himself in the leg. First of the cliche is to shoot yourself in the foot is it not...? I had to text a friend to confirm what I heard to be true. And I was still in shock yesterday when I started reading the stories about it.
So here's my thought - personally I am in a quantry - I mean I am all about the whole Michael Vick dog fight charges - that's a pretty long drawn out hobby going on there. But carrying a conceiled firearm that is against the law as well. But I would like to think that maybe the Giants can do something positive with this... Ahhh - I am thinking some PSAs should be in order. Iwas lucky. Guns kill. That type of stuff. Sure the suspension is needed but in your down time what are you going to do about it...
It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.
I could rant some more but I think I will leave it at that for now.

Well that was sad...
I spent the better part of my day cleaning the closet in my guest room. It has tonnes of space and I don't use it except for storage. I just hate eye clutter. And I hate when I open the doors to the closet and there we have eye clutter. I really don't like things out on my counter tops either.
So I knew I had some boxes that could afford some straightening and I know once the year is over I can rumage through some other boxes of financials.
I ended up moving 4 more boxes into the attic. And threw out some things.
One of the things I threw out were negatives. Given the scanning age, I can pretty much scan any crappy old picture and get a duplicate. The shoe box full of negatives really didn't need to stick around. OK - you are mad because they are bad for the environment. I can't imagine them being good for the environment - chemically treated plastic strips? But I threw them out anyways. Of course not without sorting through the envelopes... And guess what I found?
An airline ticket.... When I moved away from Bermuda I was given 21 days to gather my belongings settle my affairs and leave the island. And of course they gave me that notice a week late. It ended up being cheaper to buy a round trip ticket than a one way. I suppose that is usually the case. And that's what was hidden in the midst of all those envelopes. A little ticket portfolio from Continental with the other half of that ticket.
Yep - I kept it. I just moved it to a different box for now.

Bermuda Rugby Classic

One of my more unique memories from living in Bermuda was heading on out to the rugby classic. I had some friends that played rugby and we went to watch a few of their games every once in a while. But this was a big to do on the island.
I think it was a Sunday afternoon and a friend and I headed on out to the field. A different field than where it is played today. And it was rainy and damp and chilly. But it was lots of fun.... The fans are just as entertaining as the games.
Today I am not exposed to much rugby. It's not as big of a sport here in NC as other places in the world. However my friend's son is an amazing rugby player. In fact he got a scholarship to university to play rugby. One of these days I hope to watch him play.
In the meantime, I hope all my friends are enjoying themselves this last day of the games in Bda.

End of an Error
So the old Club Med was imploded on Monday. I have to laugh because ever since I started visiting the island in 1991 it has been called the "old Club Med"... I have to wonder, when in the world was it really a Club Med?
I am going to have to go through some old photo albums to see if I have any shots of the hotel from Fort St. Catherines from some of my earlier visits.
I know I have friends that were out there for the implosion... Maybe someone will send me some pics? :) And I can post one or two... Or not...
I have never been to a building implosion. They imploded the old convention center here a few years back. But I didn't have the time to trek that way to see it. Probably won't make my list of things to do in this lifetime. But hey - you never know...

They are all pretty neat... especially the series of big bangs before the building starts to move...

Charlotte and more duty free mooted as tourism falters

Tourism chiefs have brainstormed ways to combat the effects of the global economic downturn.
The resulting ideas included increasing the availability of duty-free shopping and a greater focus on luring visitors from New York and North Carolina.
At the close of Friday's summit Premier and Minister of Tourism Ewart Brown told the 20 attendees: "The energetic commitment of everyone at this table is clear and undeniable."
The Department of Tourism sent representatives, along with the Hotel Association, Alliance for Tourism, Chamber of Commerce and the Department of Airport Operations.
According to Dr. Brown's press secretary Glenn Jones, short, mid and long term tourism strategies were discussed. The meeting came after a warning from Dr. Brown earlier this month that Bermuda faces three lean years as the global recession bites.
Overall visitor arrivals slipped by more than four percent in the first six months of this year compared to 2007. Visitors from the US were down more than 14 percent. Total air arrivals dropped ten percent.
The slowdown was also reflected in spending figures. The Department of Tourism estimated visitors spent between $58 and 75 million in the second quarter of this year compared to $77-80 million last year.
"Increased marketing presence in the New York market was among the solutions the summit agreed to action in the short term. More visitors come from New York than any other market. It is believed there is potential for more visitors from that market, particularly between November and March," said Mr. Jones.
"Increased availability of duty free shopping for visitors was among the solutions the summit agreed to action in the mid-term. The Chamber of Commerce reports some of its retailers have already begun talks with the Ministry of Finance to increase this tourism-specific offering. Post-visit research indicates this is one area Bermuda visitors would like to see more options."
Mr. Jones said participants agreed to investigate Charlotte, North Carolina, as a year-round market to pull visitors from in the long term.
"Charlotte is within 90 minutes of Bermuda and is the number six fastest growing city in the United States with a mean household income of $97,000. Population in Charlotte is projected to grow from 1.6 million today to 4.8 million by 2028, it was revealed at the summit. At present there is seasonal air service between Bermuda and Charlotte," said Mr. Jones.
He added that other potential strategies, particularly as they relate to Canada and the UK, would not be discussed publicly until more research could be done and more consultation could be conducted. Those inquiries and talks will begin straight away.
Dr. Brown said: "From the moment we started the summit people came to the table with solid ideas. We were able to immediately gauge feedback from our industry partners and agree on a way forward. I think everyone around the table would agree we made some progress today."
John Harvey, of the Hotel Association, said: "This was a very productive meeting. The Premier recommended we meet like this quarterly and all of us were on board with that. It's important that we are on the same page as we deal with these economic conditions affecting travel."
It would be great if they could talk USAir into doing year round direct flights!!! And hey maybe they could bump the cost down a bit too... However with the shopping around here - they may find the opposite happens - providing another city for shopping off the island. I guess we shall just have to wait and see.

Two Different Worlds
So I stayed up late to watch the women's gymnastics on Thursday night. I beleive I was up to a little after 1pm. WAY late for me. I was so sucked in by the performances and the competition. It was great to watch.
On Friday morning they interviewed the two girls - Nastia is 18 and Shawn is 16. They did so well in the interview. They were so well spoken. It made me proud to have them up there representing my country and gymnastics.
And then I arrive to work. One of the things I do on a fairly regular basis is look at the Bermuda news on the Royal Gazette web-site. Their news? Their latest story on a 16 year old girl? Well she was just arrested along with 4 teenage boys for allegedly stabbing an 18 year old boy to death this past Saturday. And when I read further as to what they had on their possession as presumed weapons it just made me ill.
Let's hope more role models of the olympics make the news and inspire the younger generations to do great things... Because the other news is just too horrific and sad.
And on a positive note, I see the Bermudian equestrian may be going to the finals. Now that would be cool.

Happy Cup Match!

I have been to the actually game once. I tried to watch cricket but still don't get it. I have friends here in the States that grew up outside the US playing cricket for fun. They have told me it is OK that I dont get the sport. phew...
